Statement
Dear Sir or Madam,
In recent days, we have received numerous enquiries that indicate considerable confusion regarding the organisation and promotion of the Karol Lipiński Violin Competition. We wish to put an end to any speculation and clarify the situation.
Karol Lipiński is an absolute legend of Polish violin playing, and we are delighted that his work inspires so many people and institutions. However, we must express our disapproval and concern regarding the existence of two competitions bearing the same name. This situation creates unnecessary confusion and causes considerable turmoil within the music community, particularly amongst artists from abroad.
We therefore wish to emphasise clearly that the Karol Lipiński International Violin Competition in Toruń and the Karol Lipiński International Violin Competition in Wrocław are two completely different, independent events.
Toruń: In 2027, the Toruń Symphony Orchestra will organise the 7th International Karol Lipiński Violin Competition in Toruń. This is an event with a well-established, long-standing tradition. The first edition took place in 2007, and the 6th edition in 2024. From the very beginning, the competition has been inextricably linked with our city. Full details and the rules for the next edition will be available shortly on our official website: www.lipinski-competition.com
Wrocław: The local Academy of Music (named after Karol Lipiński) is organising the 2nd Karol Lipiński International Violin Competition in 2026. This is an initiative entirely separate from the activities of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra. It is worth mentioning here that when we named our competition after Karol Lipiński some years ago, we sent a letter to the Academy of Music in Wrocław to inform them of this initiative. Our letter remained unanswered at the time. Furthermore, when the first edition of the Wrocław competition was announced, we contacted representatives of the Academy there, clearly pointing out the significant problem posed by the duplication of the name. Unfortunately, our objections were dismissed, and the organisers of the Wrocław event saw no problem with the situation. We therefore regret all the more that, despite our efforts, the name has not been changed.
We would like to inform everyone interested in the International Karol Lipiński Violin Competition in Toruń that reliable updates on the next edition can be found at www.lipinski-competition.com and on the official social media profiles of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra.
Yours sincerely,
Przemysław Kempiński
Director of the Toruń Symphony Orchestra
